News – April 2020

The COVID-19 Pandemic has dramatically affected all of us.  We are all worried about our income and assessing the different future opportunities of our trade.   The MiTiN Board has been busy working on some activities that may benefit our members.  Following some good news and a few announcements:

  • MiTiN has placed a formal request with the State Court Administration Office (SCAO) and the Foreign Language Board of Review (FLBR) to extend or postpone the due date for Certified and Qualified Interpreters to present evidence of completion of the CEU’s necessary to retain their status.   Currently Interpreters and Translators must present evidence of 10 CEU’s completed by September 30th, we are trying to obtain an extension for all of us.
  • The FLBR has postponed enforcement of the requirement that a Qualified Interpreter must pass the consecutive portion of the oral examination.  Furthermore, The SCAO has announced that the written and oral exams have been cancelled and postponed until at least July and October, respectively.
  • Paycheck Protection Program (PPP)  –  Yes, you may be eligible to apply for the Paycheck Protection Program if you are a small business that employs 500 employees or fewer, a sole proprietor, an independent contractor, a gig economy worker, and/or a self-employed individual.    See enclosed letter from the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship.  For more information visit www.michigan.gov/uia or  https://miwam.unemployment.state.mi.us/ClmMiWAM
  • MiTiN is developing new training opportunities that may be offered as soon as the Stay-at-Home order is lifted and when social distancing ends.  In order to complete more CEU’s, we are planning to offer a longer event.  Possibly as follows:

       Seminar # 1 (two presentations/speakers) mid-morning – 2 CEU’s

       Lunch

       Seminar # 2 (two presentations/speakers) early afternoon – 2 CEU’s

This way, individuals may attend one or two seminars, depending on their individual interest and need for CEU’s.

Cost will be greater for non-active MiTiN members.  More information later, as we further develop this idea and when we are allowed to gather as a group.

  • We remind you that all MiTiN memberships expire on December 31st of every year.  If you have not paid your 2020 MiTiN membership dues, we encourage to do so by sending a check payable to MiTiN, to P.O. Box 852, Novi, MI 48375.  We will notify you once your check is received and will add your profile in our website.  Your MiTiN membership provides many benefits that are not available to non-members.
  • MiTiN has launched an updated website.  Anybody may find “active” MiTiN members profiles in our new website.

We are here to serve you.  Stay healthy and safe.

We are in isolation, but we are not alone.
